David's musical family influenced him early in his life with gospel and classical music. His love affair with the trumpet first began as a child, listening to the symphony with his grandmother. It was there that David first remembers hearing the majestic sound of the trumpet and was drawn to it immediately. He continued to play in school ensembles, studying with the finest orchestral players, and also winning state and regional competitions.

At 18, David won an audition to perform with the United States Navy Music Program. After graduation form the Armed Forces School of Music in Virginia Beach, David was stationed in an all-star band in New Orleans. David enjoyed performing in groups ranging from a classical brass quintet, to full size big-band, to intimate jazz combos. In New Orleans, David met native Jerome Theriot, a saxophone player and composer dynamo, who also shared a passion for jazz and performing and wanted to make a CD.

Over the next few years, David traveled to the midwest, performing with the Tulsa Philharmonic and sitting in with different Jazz, Afro-Cuban and Blues groups. During this time, Jerome continued to write music and perform with the Navy. Then, with their strong musical backgrounds, they each gained a position performing demanding jazz and Broadway-style shows on several cruise lines.
After traveling around the globe, David settled in the Twin Cities of Minnesota where he met piano legend Bobby Peterson, the former pianist for Buddy Rich and many other jazz legends. Bobby was the first musician David met in the Twin Cities and over time, Bobby became a mentor to David.
In 2001, David and Jerome began collaborating on Wingin' ' It. Bobby introduced David to veteran Steve Miller Band sideman Billy Peterson and Gordy Knutson and the quintet was complete. Sadly, Wingin' It would be the first and only CD that Bobby and David would make together. Later that year, at David's wedding and after a truly inspired jam session, Bobby had a heart attack and passed away a few days later. It is to Bobby, with much love and gratitude, that this recording is dedicated.

Wingin' It debuted on the U.S. Jazzweek Jazz Chart at #37, rose to #14 and stayed on the chart for 8 weeks.  It was the only self-produced jazz cd on the chart.
